In a fragment of time, the world has suddenly become smaller. In just a couple of decades huge masses of people, goods, information and capital are all criss-crossing the globe at an accelerating rate.
At the same time virtual finance, driven by ever-enhanced computer technology, has outmanoeuvered traditional economic and social models. Out of control it is in danger of destroying the real economy on which our true income and expenditure are based. Can we, or should we, prevent it?
In other fields we have lost control of technical development. Take the exploration of unsustainable resources for example, like BP’s oil-spill in the Gulf of Mexico, or the apparently false findings by scientists on climate change.
And as the shockwaves from our recent economic calamity abate, it is normal hard-working people who feel the change most acutely; more so than industry and world leaders looking down from their ivory towers. But it is the conscience of the world which can put things straight again. Our collective human conscience, if allowed to, will invariably deliver the right solution for the world and for the future of the human race.
Contrary to popular belief, we are not in a negative period such as we have seen so many times in the past. But we are at a turning point in history!
Whatever happens from here, there is one thing the good people of the world all agree on: We have to return to an economy and politics run with good ethics at heart.
